Pediatric Nursery Student Expectations

Daily Work Hours:  Monday to Friday 0700-1700.               

Preceptors: Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs)

Location(s): North Tower 11 (main) and Parkview 4

Morning rounds:

  1. Report in the back office at the end of the floor at the Newborn Nursery in North Tower 11 (NT 11) at 7:00 AM.
  2. Expect to carry up to three patients. Please keep any patients you have previously followed for continuity of care.
  3. Expect to perform a thorough chart review of the assigned baby prior to rounding.  This review should include all attending/nurse practitioner notes, consultation notes, nursing notes, vital signs over a 24-hour period, daily weight change, daily input, daily output (number of void and stool), medications, pertinent labs, recent imaging studies, and any other ancillary investigations pertinent to your patient.  
  4. Students are expected to go to the mother/baby’s room with accompanying attending/nurse practitioner during rounds, not beforehand.
  5. Expect to perform and practice thorough physical examination under the supervision of your preceptor.
  6. Record cases and procedures in the Case & Procedure Log
  7. You are expected to present your patients to your preceptor on rounds, this is not including the physical exam, since you will only be going into the room with the preceptor.
  8. Your presentation and clinical performance will be used to help determine your preceptor’s evaluation.
  9. After rounds is your opportunity to finish notes, follow up on patients, and ask questions. Feel free to use extra time to do Aquifer cases or any studying you would like, just be available on Voalte for new admissions/procedures and let the preceptor know where you will be.
  10. One afternoon will be spent with the Labor and Delivery Baby Nurse, and one with Lactation.
